PGT Door Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We install and service PGT door hardware and components across San Diego, with most hardware-and-installation jobs running $180 – $520 depending on the part and the condition of the surrounding frame. If your PGT door latch, hinge, roller, or weather seal has failed, we typically carry the replacement on the truck and can often complete the swap the same day we diagnose it. Most owners discover the problem the same way: a door that suddenly drags, a handle that spins without catching, or a seal that’s letting dust and noise in from the alley side.
San Diego is hard on door hardware in ways homeowners don’t expect. Salt air near Point Loma and Ocean Beach accelerates corrosion on exposed hinges and thresholds. Inland neighborhoods like Rancho Bernardo and Scripps Ranch deal with fine dust that eats at nylon rollers. And in older Mission Hills bungalows, doors that were never perfectly hung to begin with put uneven pressure on hinges until something finally gives. That’s usually when the phone rings.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT makes a wide range of hinged patio, French, and entry-door systems under series names like WinGuard, SpectraGuard, and Eze-Breeze, and the hardware specs vary more than you’d expect between them. The same visual door style often uses different hinge leaf sizes, roller wheel diameters, or strike plate profiles depending on the series, the year it was manufactured, and whether it was ordered as an impact-rated assembly. A WinGuard hinge will not always interchange with a SpectraGuard hinge, even if the screw holes line up.
The fastest way to identify what you have is to look for the PGT label etched or stickered on the door edge near the hinge side. It will show the series, the production date, and an order code. If the label is gone, we measure the existing part against the door thickness and weigh it, which usually narrows it down. For PGT specifically, we default to OEM parts for anything that affects the door’s structural or impact rating: hinges, locksets, and keeper assemblies. For wear items like rollers and weatherstripping, quality aftermarket equivalents made to the same dimensional specs are often a smarter buy, and we’ll tell you when they are and when they’re not.
One gotcha worth knowing: PGT changed its hinge screw pattern on some 2016-and-newer series, so a part that visually matches from an older model may not seat the same. We’ve learned to check that pattern before quoting anything, because showing up with the wrong part wastes your afternoon and ours. We’re an independent dealer and installer, not a PGT corporate arm, so we match parts by measurement and series, not guesswork.
Signs Your PGT Door Installation Is Failing
- The door drags or catches at the bottom edge. This usually means a hinge has worn enough to let the door settle, or a roller wheel has flat-spotted. On PGT impact doors, the extra glass weight makes hinge wear show up faster than on a standard patio door.
- The handle turns but the latch doesn’t engage. Inside the mortise cassette, spring tabs fatigue over time, especially in high-cycle doors like the one from the kitchen to the yard. The parts are small, but a door that won’t latch is a real security gap.
- You hear a grinding or clicking sound when swinging the door. On hinged units, that’s often a bearing or knuckle that has lost its grease or begun to corrode. Near the coast, salt-laden air accelerates this dramatically.
- Water or light is visible through the door’s edge seals. San Diego’s dry season hides this, but November through March reveals it. Worn compression seals and dried foam inserts let water chase the threshold channel right into the subfloor.
- The door won’t stay in place when partially open. If the door drifts on its own, you have a hinge tension or alignment issue, not an operator problem. Letting it go too long can stress the frame screws and widen the screw holes in the jamb.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For most PGT door installation parts in San Diego, here’s where pricing lands with labor included:
- Hinges (pair): $120 – $230 installed, depending on series and finish
- Roller assembly (per panel): $140 – $280 installed
- Lockset / mortise latch replacement: $180 – $340 installed, OEM PGT parts on the higher end of that range for WinGuard models
- Weatherstripping / threshold seal replacement: $90 – $220 installed
- Full hardware re-alignment (hinges, latch, strike plate): $180 – $320 installed
The price range is driven by two things: whether OEM PGT parts are required for the application, and how far the surrounding frame has shifted. San Diego homes on clay soil, especially in areas like Clairemont and Mira Mesa, move seasonally, and a door that’s been dragging for years may have also pushed the jamb out of square. We give every customer the written price before any work starts, so the number you approve is the number you pay. Every PGT door installation part and our labor on it carries a written warranty, and if the fix fails during that window, we come back and redo it at no charge.
DIY or Call Us?
There are a few things any homeowner can check safely before calling: the screw tightness on the hinge leaves, whether the threshold channel is packed with debris, and whether the strike plate has shifted. Tightening screws and clearing the track is fair game. Beyond that, this is where DIY usually goes sideways, and we’re honest about it because we’ve fixed enough well-intentioned attempts to know the pattern. PGT impact doors are heavy, often 200 pounds or more per panel for laminated-glass WinGuard units. If the door drops while you’re working on the hinge or roller, the risk isn’t just to the door; it’s to your hands, feet, and the tile floor beneath you. The coil and tension components inside mortise locksets are under constant spring load, and the wrong move can send small parts flying across the garage. If your door drags, grinds, or won’t latch, call us at (619) 793-3829, and we’ll put a uniformed technician with the right parts in front of you. Free estimate before any work begins.
FAQs
Most PGT hinges and hardware last 10 to 15 years in San Diego, but homes within a mile of the coast should plan for closer to 8 to 12 due to salt corrosion. Rollers typically wear before hinges. Call (619) 793-3829 and we’ll assess what’s on your door.
Sometimes rollers can be cleaned and re-greased and hinges can be re-tensioned, but if the part is already grinding or the door has begun to sag, repair is usually temporary. We’ve rebuilt hinges before and we’ll be straight about when it isn’t worth your money. The estimate is free.
Most single-part replacements take 45 to 90 minutes if the frame is still square. Adding a full alignment and strike plate adjustment can bring it to a couple of hours, including cleanup.
We carry the most common PGT hinges, rollers, and weather seals on our service trucks, along with matching parts for CGI, CWS, and ES Windows. For specific WinGuard or SpectraGuard series hardware, we may need a day or two to bring in the OEM part from our local supplier.
