CGI Window Replacement: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

If you have a CGI window with a failed part, the replacement usually runs $240 – $480 installed for most sash, balance, or latch repairs, and we can typically get it done within a few days of your call. You’ll know something’s wrong when the sash won’t stay up, the window won’t lock cleanly, or you feel a draft that wasn’t there last year. In older San Diego homes, especially bungalows in Mission Hills or Point Loma where salt air works on hardware for years, we see these failures happen slowly until one morning the window just won’t cooperate.

Call (619) 793-3829

We stock a deep bench of CGI-compatible parts on our trucks, and if we need to order something unusual, we’ll tell you the exact day it lands before you pay anything.

Which CGI Models This Applies To

CGI builds impact-rated windows and doors, and the replacement parts you’ll need depend on the series. We work on the Sentinel, Estate, and Targa lines most often around San Diego. The quickest way to identify your part is the sticker on the upper track or the side of the sash. It will list the model number and sometimes the glass package, and that tells us if we’re matching OEM hardware or a specific low-e coating.

Here’s the gotcha most people discover the hard way: CGI has changed balance spring lengths and latch geometry between production runs on the same model line. A Sentinel sash from 2011 won’t necessarily accept a 2022 balance. We check the etched date code on the frame corner and the balance stamp before we order anything. OEM parts cost about 20 – 30 percent more than quality aftermarket equivalents, but on impact-rated windows we lean OEM when the part touches the seal or the latching mechanism. Aftermarket balances and weatherstripping from reputable suppliers work fine and save money, and we’ll be straight about which is which.

A note on us: Westlight Windows San Diego is an independently owned Kingswell location. We are not affiliated with CGI, and we don’t claim to be. We carry their product line because it’s good, and we know the hardware.

Signs Your CGI Window Replacement Is Failing

  • Sash won’t stay raised. The balance springs have lost tension. CGI balances in San Diego’s coastal humidity tend to wear at the connection point where the spring hooks into the sash shoe, not along the coil itself.
  • Window won’t lock or handle feels loose. The multipoint lock bar has slipped out of alignment. On impact-rated CGI Targa windows, the lock rods must seat into the keepers at both top and bottom, and a bent rod throws the whole assembly off.
  • Visible condensation between the panes. That’s a failed seal in the insulated glass unit, which means the low-e coating – a thin layer that reflects heat back into the room in winter and out in summer – is no longer doing its job. This is a glass replacement, not a hardware fix.
  • Hard to slide, even after cleaning the track. The roller assemblies on the bottom of the sash have flat-spotted. We see this most on windows facing the afternoon sun in east San Diego County, where repeated heat cycling makes the nylon rollers brittle.
  • Draft or whistle around the frame. The weatherstripping has compressed past recovery. On CGI windows older than 10 years, the EPDM gaskets lose their spring and leave a 1/16-inch gap you can feel with the back of your hand.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Here’s what San Diego homeowners usually pay for common CGI parts replacement, installed:

  • Replacement balance pair for a single-hung or slider sash: $180 – $290
  • Multipoint lock assembly replacement: $220 – $360
  • Roller assembly replacement (set of four): $160 – $280
  • Weatherstripping replacement for a complete frame: $140 – $240
  • Insulated glass unit replacement for a sealed sash: $320 – $550

Every quote includes the part, labor, and cleanup. We write the price down before any work starts, and it doesn’t change at the door. Our techs are background-checked and uniformed, and they’ll explain what they found in plain language. If the replacement doesn’t hold up within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge – what we call our 365-Day Done Right Promise, backed by the Kingswell Guarantee.

DIY or Call Us?

You can safely clean the track, tighten a loose handle screw, or check whether the weep holes are clear. Beyond that, I’d step back. The danger isn’t the glass itself – it’s the stored tension in the balance springs and the weight distribution on a 50-pound impact sash. If a balance spring lets go while you’re pulling the old one out, it’s a serious hand injury, and on a ladder the consequences are worse.

Most CGI window replacements take our techs 45 to 90 minutes per sash once the new part is in hand. If you call us at (619) 793-3829, we’ll ask for the make, model, and a photo of the sticker if you can manage it, then quote a real number over the phone. Estimates are free.

FAQs

How long do CGI window parts typically last in San Diego?
Balances and rollers usually last 12 to 18 years depending on exposure to salt air along the coast, while seals in insulated glass units fail in 10 to 15 years. If the window is original to a house built in the mid-2000s, you’re likely in the replacement window right now. Call (619) 793-3829 for an exact quote.

Can the part be repaired instead of replaced?
Sometimes yes. A lock rod that’s bent can often be straightened and realigned for less money than a full assembly. A flat-spotted roller or cracked balance shoe can’t, and we’ll only recommend a repair if it will last. We don’t do temporary fixes on impact hardware.

How long does a CGI window replacement swap take?
Most part replacements take under two hours from the time we start to the moment we wipe down the sill and hand you the old parts. If we have to order the part, we’ll tell you the expected ship date before you pay anything

Do you stock CGI replacement parts, or do I have to wait?
We stock the common stuff for the Sentinel, Estate, and Targa lines on our trucks, including balances, rollers, and lock bars. Unusual failures – like a custom glass unit – take a week or two. We’ll tell you which one you’re dealing with before you commit.

"Our energy bill in summer was brutal. New windows made a real dent in it. Salesman wasn't pushy and didn't do the fake "today only" discount thing the others tried."

BBethany Oh
★★★★

"Nice windows and a clean install. There was a small delay getting one of the windows from the manufacturer, so one opening was done a couple weeks after the rest. They communicated it though."

WWalt Prentiss
★★★★★

"Replaced eight drafty old windows that were basically single pane. The house is warmer already and the street noise is way down. Crew was on time both days and the price was exactly the quote."

HHarold Bemis
★★★★★

"Our sliding patio door had come off its track years ago and we just lived with it. New one is smooth as butter. They hauled off the old one and vacuumed up before they left."

JJessica Landry
★★★★

"Windows are great and the install was solid. One of the installers was quieter and didn't explain much, but the lead walked me through everything at the end and made sure I was happy."

LLamar Jennings
★★★★★

"Front door was swollen and wouldn't latch half the year. New door and frame, done in a day. Looks great and actually seals. Written price didn't budge."
