CGI Door Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
CGI door installation in San Diego typically runs $850 – $2,400 installed, depending on the door series, frame condition, and whether you’re replacing a panel or the entire pre-hung unit. We stock CGI-compatible hardware, thresholds, and weatherstripping on our trucks, and most single-door swaps are completed in one visit. Most San Diego homeowners discover a part has failed the hard way: a door that suddenly drags on the threshold, a lock that won’t throw, or a frame corner that’s started to sag after years of coastal humidity and sun cycling.
If you have a CGI product and something has failed or is starting to fail, this page tells you what to check, what it should cost in this market, and when it’s smarter to call us than to fight it yourself. We’ve installed hundreds of CGI doors across San Diego, from Mission Hills bungalows to newer track homes in Scripps Ranch, and we’ve seen what breaks first and why.
Which CGI Models This Applies To
CGI builds impact-rated doors across several residential lines, and the model determines which parts fit. The CGI Estate Collection, Sentry Series, and Legacy line are the three we see most often in San Diego homes. Each has different frame profiles, hinge geometries, and threshold designs, so a part from an Estate door won’t necessarily seat correctly on a Sentry. If you can find the model sticker on the door edge or frame jamb, that’s the fastest way to narrow down what you’re dealing with. No sticker? Measure the slab thickness and the hinge-to-hinge spacing, and we can usually identify it from photos.
One compatibility gotcha worth knowing: early CGI Sentry doors used a 4-9/16″ jamb depth as standard, but many San Diego builders framed rough openings at 4-5/8″ and shimmed the difference. If your door was installed before roughly 2012, you may have the narrower jamb, which means a new pre-hung unit won’t always drop into the old opening without trim work. We flag this on nearly half the older CGI replacements we quote in San Diego.
On OEM versus aftermarket: for hinges, roller assemblies, and strike plates, genuine CGI parts are worth the modest premium because the hole patterns match exactly. For thresholds and sweeps, a quality aftermarket equivalent from a brand like Pemko or M-D Building Products often performs just as well and saves you $40 – $90 per opening. We’ll tell you which parts make sense to buy OEM and which ones don’t, and we don’t mark up parts beyond what the supplier charges us.
We’re an independent installer, not affiliated with CGI, but we carry their product line because it holds up in salt air better than most. We also stock parts for PGT, CWS, and ES Windows doors, so if you’ve got a mixed house, we can usually sort the whole opening in one trip.
Signs Your CGI Door Installation Is Failing
- Door drags or catches on the threshold. This usually means the hinges have worn or the frame has settled, not that the slab warped. In San Diego’s clay-heavy soil zones like Clairemont and La Mesa, foundation micro-movement pulls frames out of square slowly over five to eight years. The fix is often hinge adjustment or a threshold reshim, not a new door.
- Lock won’t throw or the deadbolt grinds. When the strike plate misaligns by even 1/16″, the bolt stops seating cleanly. We see this most on CGI doors whose frames have shifted after the rainy season. It’s a ten-minute fix if caught early; ignored, people force it and chew up the bolt and strike plate, which turns a $40 repair into a $190 hardware replacement.
- Daylight around the door edges. If you can see light through the weatherstripping, the compression seal has flattened and you’re losing conditioned air. Coastal fog and hard sun cycles in San Diego kill standard weatherstripping in about 3 – 4 years. CGI’s interlocking seals last longer, but once they’re compressed flat, they’re done.
- Door feels “spongy” or soft when you lean on it. On a steel or impact-rated door, that softness is a sign the foam core has delaminated from the skin, which happens on unshaded south-facing doors after 10 – 15 years of direct sun. We’ve replaced a handful of CGI doors in Poway and Rancho Bernardo where this was the root cause of a door that no longer felt solid when it closed.
- Condensation between the glass panels (if you have a glazed CGI door). Once the insulated glass seal fails, moisture gets between panes and you can’t wipe it off. The glass unit itself can be replaced without changing the door slab, which saves real money.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For a CGI door installation in San Diego, here’s the spread we quote most often:
- Single pre-hung CGI door, standard size, existing opening: $850 – $1,400 installed
- Slab-only swap (reuse existing frame and hinges): $600 – $950 installed
- Full opening with new frame, trim, and threshold: $1,500 – $2,400 installed
- Threshold and sweep replacement only: $180 – $340 per door
What drives the range: rough opening size, whether the old frame is reusable, door glass configuration, hardware grade, and how much trim work the opening needs once we get the old door out. We give you a written line-item price before any work starts, parts listed separately from labor. No door-step revisions, ever. If the opening has hidden framing damage, we stop, show you what we found, and agree on the change in writing before touching it.
Every CGI door installation by Westlight Windows San Diego carries the Kingswell Guarantee: written price before the work, a committed arrival window, a clean job site, and a written guarantee on the finished installation. If the work fails within the guarantee period, we come back and fix it at no charge. That’s the 365-Day Done Right Promise, and it’s in writing on every job we finish.
DIY or Call Us?
Honest answer: some of this you can do yourself, and I’ll tell you exactly which parts, because Owen Satterfield has spent enough years rehanging doors that never sat right to know where owners get in trouble. You can swap a strike plate, replace a weatherstrip, or tighten hinge screws safely. That’s hardware-store work, and it’s under an hour with basic tools.
Where DIY goes wrong: pulling a pre-hung door and re-setting the frame. The slab can weigh 60 – 90 pounds, the frame has to be shimmed plumb and level within 1/8″ at three points or the door will never latch right, and a door that binds or swings open on its own is a security problem you won’t notice until it’s late. Impact-rated doors are heavier than standard, and if one gets away from you, it’s not a dent in the drywall, it’s a trip to urgent care. For that work, call us. We do this every week across San Diego, and we’ll tell you straight whether your old frame is worth saving or you’re better off with a full pre-hung unit.
Measure it right, say what it costs, show up when you said you would – the rest takes care of itself. Call (619) 793-3829 and we’ll schedule a free estimate at your place.
FAQs
Expect 15 – 20 years from a CGI door in our climate, with hardware typically needing attention every 5 – 7 years. Direct sun exposure, salt air, and how square the original installation was are the biggest lifespan factors. Call (619) 793-3829 if yours is acting up before year ten, because most of what fails early is repairable rather than a full replacement.
Yes, in most cases the individual part (hinge, threshold, strike plate, glass unit, weatherstripping) can be replaced without swapping the whole door. We only recommend full replacement when the slab itself is compromised or the frame is too far out of square. Call (619) 793-3829 and describe what you’re seeing, and we’ll tell you which path makes sense before we ever schedule a visit.
A slab-only swap typically takes 3 – 4 hours. A full pre-hung installation with new trim and threshold runs half a day to a full day depending on what we find inside the rough opening. We give you the arrival window in writing and tell you if the job is running longer before it happens.
We carry common CGI hinges, thresholds, sweeps, and strike plates on our trucks, and we have quick access to OEM panels and hardware through our parts network. For full door slabs or unusual sizes, we order from CGI’s distribution channel and the wait is usually under a week. Call (619) 793-3829 with your model number and we’ll check availability while you’re on the phone.
