ES Windows Window Replacement: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
If you own ES Windows and one has failed, replacement in San Diego typically runs $850 – $2,400 installed per window depending on size, series, and frame condition. We stock ES Windows-compatible parts and complete sash replacements on our trucks, and most swaps are done in a single visit. The way most San Diego homeowners find out they need this is specific: the window won’t close flush anymore, condensation has crept between the glass panes, or the crank on a casement window spins without moving the sash. ES Windows are well-built, but after enough years of coastal salt air and inland heat, the working parts wear out before the frame does.
We’re an independent service provider, not affiliated with ES Windows. We carry their product lines because we’ve installed enough of them around San Diego to trust how they hold up.
Which ES Windows Models This Applies To
ES Windows builds several series, and each has its own hardware and sash dimensions. The most common lines we see in San Diego homes are the ES 700 Series single-hung and sliding windows, the ES 900 Series casement and awning windows, and the ES 500 Series fixed picture windows. The 700 and 900 series are the ones with moving parts, which means they’re the ones that eventually need replacement.
Here’s the gotcha that trips up a lot of owners: ES Windows changed their hardware mounting patterns between production years. A sash from a 2012 ES 700 Series will not simply drop into a frame built in 2022, even if both windows are the same width. The lock keepers, balance shoes, and roller mounts moved a few millimeters. If you’re ordering parts online, you need the etched glass code printed in the corner of the pane, not just a tape-measure width. That code tells us the manufacturing date, series, and glass package, and it’s what we use to match the right replacement before we show up.
OEM parts from ES Windows are good quality, and for structural pieces like sashes and mullions, we recommend them. For wear items like roller assemblies, latches, and weatherstripping, quality aftermarket equivalents from Caldwell and Truth Hardware often match or exceed OEM spec for less money. We’ll tell you which is worth paying for and which isn’t.
Signs Your ES Windows Window Replacement Is Failing
- The window drags or sticks when you try to open it. In a 700 Series slider, this is almost always the bottom roller assembly wearing flat or collecting San Diego’s fine dust. In a 900 Series casement, it’s the crank gear stripping or a bent hinge arm.
- You can feel air moving around a closed window. The weatherstripping on ES Windows is a compressed foam that breaks down faster in San Diego’s UV-heavy sun than it does in most climates. When it’s flat and brittle, the seal is gone even if the lock still engages.
- Condensation or haze inside the glass itself. This means the insulated glass unit has lost its seal. The silica desiccant inside the spacer bar is saturated. You can’t wipe it off. The glass unit needs replacement, though the frame and sash are usually still fine.
- The lock won’t engage, or engages but won’t hold. ES Windows lock keepers are cast metal and they do wear out. Over time the striker plate bends and the latch misses it entirely. This is a security issue as much as a convenience one.
- Water stains below the window or on the interior sill. Failed sill flashing or a rotted weep-baffle lets water drain into the wall instead of out the bottom of the frame. In coastal neighborhoods like Point Loma or La Jolla where marine air is constant, this shows up sooner.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For an ES Windows-compatible window replacement in San Diego, here’s what we quote and what it includes.
- Glass-only replacement (sealed unit swap): $350 – $750 installed, using the original sash and frame.
- Sash replacement (new moving panel with fresh hardware and glass): $650 – $1,200 installed.
- Full window replacement (frame and sash): $1,100 – $2,400 installed, depending on size, series, and whether we’re doing a retrofit or a full-frame pull.
- Hardware replacement only (rollers, cranks, locks, weatherstripping): $180 – $450 per window, parts and labor.
Every price on this page is a range, not a quote. What drives the spread in San Diego is frame condition at the time of install, glazing package (standard, low-e, or impact-rated), and access. A second-story window over a steep Oceanside slope costs more to work on than a ground-level unit in Clairemont. We write your price down before work starts, and it doesn’t change unless we both agree in writing. Our 365-Day Done Right Promise applies here: if the replacement fails within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge.
Low-e glass (a thin coating that reflects heat back into the room in winter and out in summer) adds about $80 – $180 per window depending on size, and it’s worth it for west-facing glass in San Diego’s afternoon sun.
DIY or Call Us?
Most ES Windows window replacement work is not dangerous, so here’s the honest split. You can safely replace a flipper handle, a lift rail, or visible exterior weatherstripping with basic tools and a little patience. You can also inspect your own windows: open and close each one, check for broken seal haze, and note which locks are getting sloppy before you call so we bring the right parts. What we don’t recommend is pulling a sash out of an ES 700 Series frame without the right spring-loaded balance tool. The shoe balance is under pressure, and when it releases, it can take a piece of your hand or shatter the glass. Same goes for casement hardware: once you unclamp the hinge arm, the sash wants to fall, and it’s heavier than people expect. We handle this work every week with the right tools and fresh hardware on the truck. Measure it right, say what it costs, show up when you said you would – the rest takes care of itself. If you’re in San Diego and you’d rather not fight it, call us at (619) 793-3829 and we’ll schedule a look.
FAQs
ES Windows frames typically last 30 – 40 years in San Diego’s climate, but moving hardware like rollers, cranks, and weatherstripping generally needs replacement every 10 – 15 years depending on sun exposure and proximity to the coast. Insulated glass seals fail on average between 15 and 25 years, sooner if the window gets direct afternoon sun in inland neighborhoods like Scripps Ranch or El Cajon. Call (619) 793-3829 if yours are showing age and you want an honest assessment.
Yes, and in most cases the repair is a better use of money than a full window replacement. Hardware, weatherstripping, and even locked-up balances can usually be repaired with OEM or quality aftermarket parts, and we quote repair versus replacement side by side so you can decide with the real numbers in front of you. If the glass unit has failed, the sash is still often reusable and we only replace the sealed unit. Call (619) 793-3829 and we’ll tell you which route makes sense for your specific window.
Glass-only and hardware replacements take 45 minutes to 2 hours per window. A full sash replacement runs 2 – 4 hours. Full-frame pulls on ES Windows are usually a full day for the first window and about 4 hours per additional window once we’re set up. We give you a committed arrival window before we show up, and we leave the job site cleaner than we found it. Call (619) 793-3829 for a specific timeline on your project.
We stock common ES Windows hardware replacements (rollers, locks, cranks, weatherstripping, balance shoes) on our trucks, along with matching sealed glass units for recent ES Windows series. Odd sizes and discontinued-series sashes take 3 – 7 business days to source. We also carry parts for PGT, CGI, and CWS window lines where they overlap. Call (619) 793-3829 and we’ll confirm availability before we schedule anything.

He grew up patching siding and rehanging doors with his uncle in the San Fernando Valley, got his formal training at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, and now leads our San Diego crew with the same rule he’s always had: say the price, show up on time, stand behind the work.
