CWS Door Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide

We stock and install CWS-compatible door components across San Diego, and most CWS door installations run between $450 and $1,850 installed depending on the part, the door series, and what the frame looks like once we get into it. If you’ve got a CWS door that’s dragging, sticking, leaking air, or a handle that’s gone loose, we can usually get the right part matched and the job scheduled within the same week you call. Most San Diego homeowners discover a failing CWS part the hard way: the door starts taking real effort to latch, or a gap opens at the corner where water finds its way in during a winter storm.

Call (619) 793-3829

Westlight Windows San Diego is an independently owned and operated Kingswell location. We’re not affiliated with CWS, but we install and service their doors regularly enough to know which series parts are interchangeable and which ones aren’t. Owen Satterfield and our technicians carry a range of CWS-compatible hardware on the truck, so about half the door calls we run in San Diego get resolved on the first visit without waiting on a special order.

Which CWS Models This Applies To

CWS builds entry doors, patio sliders, and French-style hinged doors across a few series lines, and the part compatibility varies more than you’d expect. The older Arden and Signature series hardware doesn’t swap cleanly with the newer CWS 7000 or 8000 series, even when the door slab dimensions match. The roller sizes, hinge pin diameters, and latch backset measurements changed between generations, and that’s the number one compatibility gotcha we see in San Diego: a homeowner orders what looks like the right roller kit online, only to find the axle post is 4mm off and the slider still drags.

Here’s how to identify what you have. Open the door and look at the edge of the panel, just below the latch. CWS stamps a small series code on most units made after 2005, usually a two to three digit number followed by a letter. Wipe the edge clean first; the stamp is faint and hides under years of grime. If you can’t find it, measure the distance from the center of the latch bolt to the edge of the door. That backset measurement gets us to the right latch family fast.

For OEM versus aftermarket: CWS-branded OEM parts are still available for most series, but the wait times in San Diego run anywhere from one week to five weeks depending on the distributor. Quality aftermarket equivalents from Prime-Line and Truth Hardware are on our trucks. For rollers and sliding tracks, we typically recommend aftermarket because the material quality is equal or better and the price is 30-50% lower. For multipoint locking mechanisms, we recommend CWS OEM hardware, because aftermarket multipoint gearboxes have a mixed track record and nobody wants a patio door that won’t lock on the first try.

Signs Your CWS Door Installation Is Failing

  • The door needs a shoulder to close. If you’re lifting or shoving the panel into place, the rollers or hinge bush bearings have worn past their spec. On CWS sliders, the bottom roller assemblies sit in a track that collects grit, and San Diego’s dry, dusty air speeds up that wear.
  • The latch won’t stay engaged. A latch that pops loose isn’t just loose hardware. The strike plate has likely shifted as the door slab settled, or the multipoint gearbox inside the door edge has a broken cam. Either way, the door thinks it’s closed when it isn’t.
  • A visible gap at the corner changes with the weather. Coastal San Diego humidity swings cause vinyl and fiberglass door panels to expand and contract. A gap that opens and closes through the seasons points to failing weatherstripping or a corner joint that’s loosened inside the panel itself.
  • Condensation or haze inside the glass. If a CWS door has an insulated glass unit and you’re seeing fog between the panes, the seal has failed. That glass unit needs replacement; cleaning won’t fix it. We see this most often on doors that get direct afternoon sun in neighborhoods like Mission Hills and Point Loma.
  • The door makes a scraping sound every time it moves. That’s usually a roller that’s flattened on one side or a hinge that’s seized and grinding. Ignoring it turns a $12 roller swap into a new track installation.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

For San Diego CWS door work, expect $450 to $1,850 installed for the most common repairs and replacements. Roller and hinge swaps on CWS sliders typically run $450 to $800 including parts. Latch and lock replacement, including multipoint gearbox work, runs $750 to $1,200. Full bottom rail or sidelight replacement pushes into the $1,200 to $1,850 range because we’re removing the door panel, rebuilding the rail, and resetting the alignment.

What drives the price: whether we’re matching an existing series or drilling new hardware openings, how far the door frame has settled out of square, and whether we’re using OEM or quality aftermarket parts. You get a written, line-item price before any work starts, and that’s the price. No door-step revisions, no “we found more damage” changes unless you approve them in writing first. Every CWS door installation we complete carries the Kingswell Guarantee: a written price, a committed arrival window, a clean job site, and a written guarantee on the completed work.

Typical CWS Door Job San Diego Installed Range
Slider roller & hinge replacement $450 – $800
Latch / lock / multipoint gearbox repair $750 – $1,200
Bottom rail rebuild $1,200 – $1,850
Insulated glass unit replacement $600 – $1,100 per panel

DIY or Call Us?

Here’s the honest split. If your CWS door is dragging, you can safely inspect the bottom track for debris, wipe down the rollers, and check that the mounting screws on the handle are snug. That’s a fair Saturday morning project with a screwdriver and a shop rag. What we don’t recommend: pulling the door panel off to replace rollers or attacking a multipoint lock mechanism without the right equipment. A CWS sliding door panel weighs 90 to 140 pounds, and when it comes off the track, it has a way of finding toes, fingers, or worse. Multipoint lock gearboxes are under tension and require precise alignment to work correctly. Owen was taught early that a door that doesn’t swing or slide right is a safety problem before it’s anything else. If the fix requires panel removal, call (619) 793-3829 and let us do it properly.

"Nice windows and a clean install. There was a small delay getting one of the windows from the manufacturer, so one opening was done a couple weeks after the rest. They communicated it though."

WWalt Prentiss
