Mr-Glass Window Installation: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
Mr-Glass window installation in San Diego typically runs $320 to $680 per window when you’re replacing a failed part like a balance, latch, or weatherstripping assembly, with full sash replacements landing between $450 and $900 installed. We keep the most common Mr-Glass hardware on our trucks, so in many cases we can complete the repair the same day we come out to look at it. Most San Diego homeowners discover the problem the hard way: a window that suddenly drops when opened, a latch that won’t catch, or a draft that shows up every December when the coastal wind shifts.
You’ve got a Mr-Glass product because someone sold you on its value, and when a part fails, what you actually need is a straight answer about whether it’s worth fixing. That’s what this page is for. Owen Satterfield and our crew at Westlight Windows San Diego work on Mr-Glass windows regularly, and we’ll tell you exactly what we see fail, what it costs, and what’s worth doing about it.
Which Mr-Glass Models This Applies To
Mr-Glass has sold several product lines over the years, and the parts are not all interchangeable. The most common models we service in San Diego are the MG series horizontal sliders, the MG casement line, and the newer MG vinyl single-hung units. If you’ve got a Mr-Glass window, look for the small silver sticker on the inside of the frame near the top of the sash. It’ll have a product code that starts with “MG” followed by a number. That code matters. We’ve had customers order replacement balances online for an MG-3 and find out they needed an MG-3S, which is a different spring weight entirely.
Here’s the reality with Mr-Glass parts. Mr-Glass is owned by a larger manufacturer, and their hardware is often proprietary to their extrusion design. A generic big-box balance will sometimes fit, and sometimes it will bind in the track. We prefer OEM Mr-Glass components whenever they’re available because the tolerances match. Where aftermarket makes sense is weatherstripping and glazing bead, which are wear items with dimensionally identical equivalents. We’ll always tell you which option we’re quoting and why.
San Diego’s climate plays a specific role here. Coastal salt air corrodes the zinc-plated steel components in older Mr-Glass windows faster than manufacturers expect. In areas like Point Loma, Ocean Beach, and Coronado, we routinely see balances and pivot bars that look ten years older than their install date. A window that would last 15 years in La Mesa might need hardware at year 8 in Mission Beach.
Signs Your Mr-Glass Window Installation Is Failing
- Window drops or slams shut when you let go. This is almost always a failed spring balance or a disconnected sash cord. The balance is a coil or block-and-tackle mechanism inside the frame that counterweights the sash, and when it goes, you’re holding the full weight of the glass every time you open it.
- You have to lift and jiggle to get it closed. The pivot bar at the bottom of the sash has slipped out of the pivot shoe, or the shoe itself cracked. Common on Mr-Glass single-hungs in homes where windows get opened and closed daily.
- Draft around the window even when it’s locked. The interlock weatherstrip at the meeting rail has flattened or the wool pile in the tracks has worn down. San Diego homes near the coast see this sooner because salt and moisture break down the adhesive backing.
- Condensation or fog between the glass panes. The insulated glass unit (IGU) seal has failed. This isn’t repairable wet, it’s a replacement of the glass unit itself. Mr-Glass IGUs are still being produced for most models, so you’re not automatically looking at a full window replacement.
- Lock or latch won’t engage fully. The sash has shifted out of square, usually because a corner balancer failed on one side. You can’t just force the lock, the window needs to have its hardware re-seated or replaced so it sits true again.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
For Mr-Glass windows in San Diego, here’s what we charge as of 2026 and what each option includes. These are installed prices, which means the part, the labor, the trip, and the cleanup are all in the number we quote you upfront.
| Service | Price Range (Installed) | When It’s the Right Call |
|---|---|---|
| Spring balance replacement (per window) | $180 – $340 | Window won’t stay up, drops when released |
| Pivot bar and pivot shoe replacement | $150 – $260 | Window tilts wrong, jiggles, won’t seat in frame |
| Weatherstripping replacement (full perimeter) | $140 – $280 | Drafts, visible cracking or flattening of seals |
| Lock and latch replacement | $120 – $210 | Lock won’t engage, handle stripped or loose |
| Insulated glass unit replacement (per sash) | $280 – $550 | Fog between panes, failed seal but frame is sound |
| Full sash replacement | $450 – $900 | Multiple parts failed, sash cracked or warped |
The range depends on two things: the age of your Mr-Glass window and whether the parts are standard or need ordering. Older MG series units sometimes require shims and re-glazing when we replace glass, which adds time and cost. Every price we give is a written number before any work starts. That’s not a sales pitch, it’s how Owen has run this business since day one: say the price, do the work, no revised invoices at the door.
Every parts replacement we install comes with our 365-Day Done Right Promise. If the part fails or the work isn’t right within a year, we come back and fix it at no charge. No negotiating, no “well, that’s technically a different issue.” We put it in writing and hand it to you when the job is done.
DIY or Call Us?
There are safe things an owner can do. You can check whether the window is locked before testing it, which sounds obvious but a locked sash mimics a failed balance. You can look for visible cracks in the vinyl frame or a sash that’s visibly crooked in the opening. Those observations will help you describe the problem to us over the phone.
What we don’t recommend is taking a Mr-Glass sash apart yourself. The spring balances are tension-loaded in a way that can fire out of the frame if you release them wrong, and the tilt-latch mechanism on Mr-Glass single-hungs has a plastic cam that breaks if you force the tilt before releasing both clips evenly. We’ve come to jobs where a homeowner tried a YouTube repair and ended up buying a new sash because they cracked it. That’s an honest warning, not a scare tactic. If you’re not sure, call us at (619) 793-3829 and describe what the window is doing. We’ll tell you what it likely is over the phone and give you a real price range before we ever show up.
Do You Stock Mr-Glass Parts on the Truck?
We stock the most common Mr-Glass components on our service vehicles: spring balances for the MG single-hung and slider lines, pivot bars, pivot shoes, lock sets, and weatherstrip profiles. If the part you need is an uncommon size or an older series, we’ll order it and schedule a return visit within a few days. San Diego is our regular territory, so most orders arrive in 2 to 3 business days.
How Long Does a Mr-Glass Parts Replacement Take?
A typical Mr-Glass window installation or parts replacement in San Diego takes 45 to 90 minutes once we’re at the window, depending on whether it’s one balance or a full sash swap. Insulated glass unit replacements take longer because the glazing has to set, usually closer to two hours from start to cleanup.
Can the Part Be Repaired Instead of Replaced?
For Mr-Glass hardware, the answer is almost always no when it comes to balances and pivot bars, because these parts are either stamped steel or coiled spring mechanisms that wear out. Weatherstripping can sometimes be re-seated if it’s just pulled loose, but if it’s flattened or brittle, replacement is the only fix that actually stops the draft.
Is Mr-Glass Still Supported by the Manufacturer?
Yes, Mr-Glass windows are still being manufactured, and parts are available. That’s good news compared to some brands we see in San Diego where a window from 2004 is orphaned with no parts source. We also carry PGT, CGI, and CWS among our eight stocked lines, so if your Mr-Glass frame is beyond saving, we can talk about replacement options from brands we know hold up to San Diego’s coastal climate.
