PGT Impact Garage Doors: The San Diego Owner’s Guide
We stock and install PGT-compatible impact garage doors and replacement parts throughout San Diego, with most complete door replacements running $3,800 to $7,200 installed depending on size, series, and track hardware. If your PGT door was damaged in a storm or has a panel, roller, or track issue, we can usually match the part the same week.
What brings most San Diego owners to this page is a door that started binding on one side, a roller that snapped out of its track, or a bottom panel that took a hit from a wayward ladder in the garage. Sometimes it’s slower: a door that shudders on the way up, a top panel that doesn’t seal flat, or rust blooming along the track near the coast. The good news is PGT builds these doors in standardized sizes, which means a replacement part is almost always available. The bad news, if we’re being straight about it, is that impact-rated garage doors are a different animal from the builder-grade doors most people are used to. The panels are heavier, the hardware is stronger, and the springs carry more load. That’s why matching the part to the exact PGT series matters as much as the part itself.
Owen Satterfield and our crew have spent years installing impact-rated doors across San Diego, from Mission Hills bungalows with sloped garage floors to newer track-home builds in Otay Ranch. The one thing we’ve learned: a PGT door installed with the wrong spring tension or a mismatched roller is worse than the old door it replaced. That’s why we measure twice and quote straight before any work starts.
Which PGT Models This Applies To
PGT’s impact garage door line includes the WinGuard and PGT 5500/7700 series, along with their architectural and hurricane-rated models. The compatibility question we hear most is whether a part from one series fits another. The short answer: track hardware and rollers are fairly universal across PGT’s residential impact doors, but panels and springs are not. A WinGuard panel won’t mate cleanly with a 7700 panel because the interlocking profiles and insulation cores differ slightly, even when the nominal width matches.
To identify what you have, check the sticker on the inside edge of the door, usually on the top or side panel. PGT stamps the series, size, and manufacturing date there. If the sticker is gone, measure the panel thickness: PGT’s impact-rated panels run 1-3/4 to 2 inches thick, versus builder doors at 1-3/8. That thickness is the first clue you’re dealing with a true impact product.
On the OEM-versus-aftermarket question for PGT specifically: we stock PGT OEM parts where they matter, including panels, strike plates, and reinforced track systems. For rollers and cables, we use a US-made aftermarket equivalent rated for the same load because PGT doesn’t manufacture those components themselves. The cost difference can be $200 to $400 on a full hardware replacement, and the performance is identical. What we won’t do is substitute a generic single-spring assembly for a PGT dual-spring setup. Those doors are balanced around specific spring rates, and guessing at tension is how you end up with a door that slams or hangs.
One more San Diego reality worth knowing: if you live within a few miles of the coast, your PGT hardware lives in salt air. We’ve seen steel tracks on 8-year-old doors in La Jolla that look 25. Galvanized and stainless components are the difference between parts that last a decade and parts that need replacing every few years.
Signs Your PGT Impact Garage Doors Is Failing
- The door binds or hesitates on one side. This usually means a roller is worn flat or a track section has shifted. On PGT impact doors, which are heavier than standard doors, even a slight binding puts real stress on the spring system. If you catch it early, it’s a roller or track adjustment. If you don’t, it becomes a spring job.
- You hear a sharp pop from the garage. That’s a spring letting go. It’s loud enough that people often think something fell off a shelf. On a PGT door with a dual-spring setup, one broken spring means the opener is now fighting half the counterbalance it was built for. Continuing to run the door will burn out the opener motor.
- The bottom panel is cracked, dented, or delaminating. Impact doors can take a hit, but a direct strike to the panel face can separate the steel skin from the insulation core. Water gets in, the panel loses rigidity, and the door starts flexing at the point of damage. A damaged panel is replaceable without a full door swap on most PGT models, provided the frame and track are still square.
- The door shudders or vibrates on the way up. On a properly balanced PGT door, travel should be smooth and quiet. Shuddering means the spring tension is wrong, the opener’s force settings are off, or a section of track has drifted out of alignment. Left alone, all three conditions feed on each other.
- The door doesn’t seal flat against the floor or weatherstrip. With a standard door, this is an annoyance. With a PGT impact door, it’s a protection problem. The product exists to create a sealed barrier against wind, debris, and water. If the door isn’t seating, the rating is being undermined, and the fix usually requires adjusting the track, replacing the bottom astragal, or both.
Replacement Cost & What’s Included
In San Diego, here’s what we tell homeowners to expect. A single PGT panel replacement runs $450 to $900 including the panel, hardware, and labor. A full spring replacement on a dual-spring PGT system runs $280 to $450. Track realignment or section replacement runs $250 to $600 per side depending on how much rail is still usable. A complete PGT impact garage door, installed and balanced, runs $3,800 to $7,200.
What drives that range: door width and height (single versus double), series, insulation rating, and whether the existing track and opener can be reused. Double-wide doors command the higher end. So do doors with heavier wind-load ratings.
Every quote includes parts, labor, haul-away of the old door if applicable, and a check of the opener’s force settings after the work. You get the written price before any work starts, and it doesn’t change at the door. The work carries a written guarantee. If a part fails or the door falls out of alignment after we leave, you call and we come back and correct it at no charge. That’s the Kingswell Guarantee, and it’s always in writing.
DIY or Call Us?
Here’s the honest split. There are things you can safely do, and there’s one thing you should never touch. Checking your PGT’s model sticker, measuring panel thickness, wiping down the track, tightening a loose bolt you can reach from a step ladder: all fine. Do those. What you don’t want to do is touch the springs, cables, or bottom brackets. Those assemblies are under constant, stored tension, and on a PGT impact door that tension is higher than a standard residential door by design. Spring and cable work is the kind of thing where one wrong move with a winding bar puts a person in an emergency room. We tell every homeowner the same thing: if it involves a spring, a cable, or a bracket under tension, call us.
If you’re not sure whether what you’re looking at is a simple adjustment or a tension-loaded repair, call (619) 793-3829. You’ll get a real person, not a voicemail box, and if we can’t diagnose it over the phone, we’ll set up a visit. Estimates are free.
FAQs
A PGT impact garage door in San Diego typically lasts 15 to 25 years, though coastal exposure can shorten the life of uncoated steel track and hardware to under a decade. Panels generally outlast hardware, which means a mid-life hardware refresh is more common than a full door replacement. Call (619) 793-3829 if you want us to assess whether your door is worth repairing or replacing. Estimates are free.
Yes, in most cases. Single panels, rollers, cables, springs, track sections, and weatherstripping are all replaceable components on PGT impact doors, and we stock or order them regularly for San Diego homes. The only time we recommend a full replacement is when the door frame is out of square, multiple panels are damaged, or the existing door doesn’t meet current wind-load requirements for your location. Call (619) 793-3829 and we’ll tell you which path makes sense for your door.
A single panel replacement takes two to three hours, and a spring replacement is typically done in under two hours. If the part needs to be ordered from PGT, expect five to ten business days before scheduling. We’ll give you a straight answer on timing when you call (619) 793-3829, and that estimate comes with a written price before any work starts.
We keep common hardware like rollers, cables, hinges, and spring assemblies stocked for standard PGT impact door sizes, and OEM panels are typically available within one to two weeks. If you have an older or unusual PGT configuration, we’ll source the correct part rather than forcing a mismatched one into place. Call (619) 793-3829 with your model number and we’ll check availability right then.
